It is the Year of the Dragon in the lunar cycle of the Chinese zodiac. In China, the dragon is a mythological and legendary creature representing good luck, strength, and health. One of the most famous dragon myths in Chinese folklore tells of a devastating drought that ravaged China. The four mighty sea dragons took pity on the human race, gathering and releasing fresh water onto the land to end the apocalyptic drought. When the Jade Emperor, ruler of heaven and earth, learned that the dragons had acted without his permission, he ordered the Mountain God to imprison them for eternity. It is from their mountain prisons that the four rivers of China sprouted: the Yellow, Yangtze, Pearl, and Amur Rivers. In 2024, Chinese New Year is celebrated from February 10th to 17th.
