Chiang O’Brien Architects is proud to announce that the Penn State Scranton Library Nursing Building received a Design Award of Honor and Silver COTE award and the SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry renovation of Marshall Hall has been recognized with a Design Award of Honor and a 2025 Gold COTE Award from AIA Southern New York (AIASNY). The Penn State Scranton Library Nursing Building Renovation and Addition project exemplifies Chiang | O’Brien Architects’ dedication to innovative, student-centered design. Completed in 2021, this transformative project enhances the academic experience with cutting-edge features tailored to meet the evolving needs of students and faculty. Key highlights include:
- Innovation and Collaboration: The library on the main floor is designed as a “center for knowledge,”featuring transparent collaboration rooms, flexible program zones, and modern furniture layouts. From quiet study areas with stunning valley views to comfortable lounge seating and state-of-the-art technology, the library fostersan engaging, collaborative environment for students.
- Student-Focused Design: The nursing program on the lower floor is organized with a racetrack circulation plan that optimizes access to simulation labs, classrooms, and faculty offices. Highlights include a monumental open staircase connecting the two floors, thoughtfully designed lounges for ad-hoc collaboration, and glazed entrances that put “science on display.”
- Enhanced Wayfinding: The building’s new vertical circulation corridor, combined with a light-filled atrium and transparent architectural elements, creates a seamless, intuitive navigation experience for all users.

The SUNY ESF Marshall Hall Revitalization project balances respect for the historic fabric of Marshall Hall with the needs of a modern academic institution.
