Syracuse University solicited Chiang | O’Brien to relocate the Burton Blatt Institute (BBI), an institute of the Syracuse University College of Law, to the fourth floor of Dineen Hall. BBI builds on the legacy of Burton Blatt, former dean of SU’s School of Education and a pioneering disability rights scholar, to better the lives of people with disabilities. BBI has offices in Syracuse, Washington, DC, and Atlanta.
Keeping with the goals of the BBI, the space was designed with Universal Design Certification (UDC). UDC applauded Syracuse University and the Burton Blatt Institute for continuing its quest for creating facilities that are more accessible and compliant with Universal Design principles. Universal Design sets out to improve the usability, safety, and health of all users.
Specific changes to meet the universal design goals included wider doors, installing door operators to every door in the renovation area, and modifying a kitchenette. Door operators were integrated into the campus security system, which allows triggering and unlocking phones or adaptive technology. Other features include the maximization of natural light to interior spaces with transoms and full glass walls; floor surfaces that are both comfortable and durable with wheelchair use; and furniture modifications that meet UDC guidelines.
