Chiang O’Brien Architects Wins Prestigious AIA New York State Award for SUNY ESF Marshall Hall Revitalization

Chiang O’Brien Architects is proud to announce that the SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry renovation of Marshall Hall has been recognized with a 2025 Excelsior Award from AIA New York State (AIANYS). This honor highlights the firm’s dedication to thoughtful, innovative design that respects history while creating vibrant spaces for the future. The Excelsior Awards, now in their 11th year, celebrate excellence in publicly funded buildings, outdoor areas, and public art across New York State.

The SUNY ESF Marshall Hall Revitalization project was recognized in the Renovation/Addition category. This transformative project balances respect for the historic fabric of Marshall Hall with the needs of a modern academic institution. It provides state-of-the-art, energy-efficient, and accessible facilities for the college’s Landscape Architecture and Environmental Studies programs. Key features include:

  • Preservation and Renewal: The project maintained the character and craftsmanship of the original structure, preserving its historical significance while seamlessly integrating new additions.
  • Sustainability: Advanced energy modeling and sustainable building practices were employed, resulting in a high-performing, energy-efficient facility.
  • Accessibility: The revitalization ensured compliance with modern accessibility standards, making the building welcoming to all students, faculty, and visitors.

The AIA New York State Excelsior Awards reflect the organization’s commitment to recognizing the critical role of architects and designers in shaping our communities. The criteria of “Firmness, Commodity, and Delight” guided the jury’s evaluation, and the SUNY ESF Marshall Hall Revitalization was celebrated for achieving all three.

Chiang O’Brien Architects extends its gratitude to SUNY ESF, the project team, and all collaborators who made this achievement possible.
