Hamilton College   |   The List Center

Cornell Health, Cornell University

The List Center at Hamilton College is a cast-in-place concrete structure designed by Ben Thompson Associates in 1966. The complex, two-story structure has four half levels, varying elevations, and a partial basement level.

The project’s primary goal was to create an academic space for the Department of Literature and Creative Writing to help facilitate several other academic facility improvement initiatives. The new renovation comprises three classrooms, six seminar rooms, 16 faculty offices, a library/seminar space, and informal study and collaboration spaces.

A new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection system is threaded through the building and primarily left exposed.

The project also addresses deferred maintenance issues to ensure the structure’s future viability, including repair and restoration of the concrete structure and enclosure at the walls and roof. Replacement of the roofing system, skylights, exterior window wall systems, and storefront entrances are also included.

Acoustical treatments of wall and ceiling surfaces in the offices and classrooms are designed to create visually and acoustically comfortable spaces.

The final design celebrates the building’s iconic architectural style, maintaining the design features of exposed concrete walls and floors and large expanses of glass.
