Fireworks were invented in China around the 9th century during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 A.D.). Chinese alchemists, in search of a recipe for eternal life, discovered gunpowder while mixing saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal, and they believed that the explosions resulting from this new mixture could ward off evil spirits. To create some of the first fireworks, people packed the newly discovered gunpowder into bamboo shoots and threw the shoots into a fire. Bam! From that point on, fireworks evolved. Today, lighting firecrackers is a popular custom to celebrate the Chinese New Year all over the world.
